Lifeguard Appreciation Day: Celebrating the team behind every safe swim
Today (July 31st) we’re celebrating Lifeguard Appreciation Day – an opportunity to recognise the incredible work of our pool team and to thank them for everything they do to keep our community safe, supported and smiling every single day.
For many people, a lifeguard is the reassuring presence sitting poolside, keeping a watchful eye over swimmers. While that is a vital part of the role, it’s only a small part of what our team does behind the scenes.
From the moment our doors open until the last swimmer leaves, our pool team is constantly working to ensure everyone has a safe, enjoyable experience. They supervise the pool, respond quickly in emergencies, deliver first aid when needed, carry out regular safety checks, monitor water quality, set up equipment, support swimming lessons, assist customers with accessibility needs and help maintain a clean, welcoming environment.
They’re often the first friendly face you see when you arrive and the calm, reassuring presence when someone needs a helping hand. Whether they’re encouraging a nervous child taking their first swimming lesson, helping someone achieve a new fitness goal, or responding instantly when seconds matter, our lifeguards demonstrate professionalism, compassion and dedication every day.
Lifeguard Appreciation Day falls during the height of the summer swimming season, when lifeguards across the country are at their busiest. It’s the perfect time to recognise the responsibility that comes with the role and the countless preventative actions they take that often go unnoticed. Many incidents are avoided simply because lifeguards remain alert, educate swimmers and spot potential risks before they become emergencies.
This year also marks 25 years of the RNLI’s beach rescue service. Since launching in 2001, RNLI beach lifeguards have achieved some truly remarkable milestones:
- Saved 2,165 lives
- Aided more than 459,000 people
- Responded to over 333,000 incidents
- Carried out more than 48 million preventative actions
These figures highlight something incredibly important: while dramatic rescues often make the headlines, the vast majority of a lifeguard’s impact comes from preventing incidents from happening in the first place. Through vigilance, education and proactive intervention, lifeguards help ensure that everyone can enjoy the water safely.
Here at Moray Leisure Centre, we’re incredibly proud of our own pool team. Their commitment extends far beyond keeping watch over the water. They help create an environment where people of all ages and abilities can build confidence, improve their health, learn lifesaving skills and make lasting memories.
Today, and every day, we’d like to say a huge thank you to our pool team and to lifeguards everywhere. Your dedication, professionalism and care make a real difference to our community, and your hard work never goes unnoticed.
Happy Lifeguard Appreciation Day!
