Falls Prevention Week

Stay Active, Stay Safe at Moray Leisure Centre

At Moray Leisure Centre, we want everyone in our community to stay safe, active, and independent. This Falls Prevention Week, we’re highlighting simple steps you can take to reduce the risk of falls – because a fall doesn’t have to mean the end of your independence.

Understanding the Risks

Falls can happen for many reasons, often a mix of personal and environmental factors. Common risks include:

  • Weak muscles or poor balance
  • Dizziness or feeling lightheaded
  • Foot problems or unsuitable footwear
  • Vision or hearing issues
  • Side effects from certain medications
  • Bladder or bowel conditions affecting mobility
  • Recognising these risks is the first step in preventing falls, and small changes can make a big difference.

Our Top Tips to Prevent Falls

  1. Keep Active

Regular exercise strengthens muscles and improves balance. At Moray Leisure Centre, we offer a variety of classes and activities — from gentle walking groups to low-impact gym sessions — that help you stay steady on your feet.

  1. Make Your Home Safer

Simple changes like removing trip hazards, keeping rooms well-lit, and installing grab rails can reduce the risk of falls. Even small adjustments go a long way.

  1. Look After Your Feet

Wear well-fitting, supportive shoes and check your feet regularly. Our fitness team can advise on suitable footwear for different activities.

  1. Health Checks Matter

Regular vision, hearing, and medication reviews are essential. Speak to your GP if you have concerns — even small changes can reduce fall risks.

  1. Eat Well and Stay Hydrated

Eating a balanced diet and drinking plenty of water helps maintain strength and energy, reducing dizziness and weakness.

"I enjoy coming to the class because it helps keep my fitness up a wee bit. If I didn't come to the class I'd just be sitting in the house growing old"

What to Do If a Fall Happens

If a fall does occur, try to stay calm. Assess yourself for injuries, and if possible, use sturdy furniture to get up slowly. Always call for help if you can’t get up safely.

Supporting Everyone in Our Community

For those living with dementia or other mobility challenges, extra precautions are important. Creating safe routines, removing hazards, and wearing suitable footwear are key ways to reduce risk.

At Moray Leisure Centre, we encourage everyone to stay active, take part in our programmes, and enjoy movement safely — because staying strong and balanced helps prevent falls.
