Frequently Asked Questions

How long does a swimming lesson last?

All swimming lessons are 30-minutes long.

What do I do when I bring my child along to their lesson?

Please check in at reception on arrival each week and bring your child’s Fit life card with you to scan. If you are PAYG then please give their name at the desk to check in.

Once they are in their swim wear, bring them to the shower area and the teacher will complete a register and collect the class from there.

What happens if my child misses a lesson?

If your child misses a lesson, then their space is still secure if it has been paid with either Fit Life or PAYG. The Lessons Coordinator will monitor continual absence that is 3 consecutive weeks or more. If your child will be absent for more than 3 weeks, and you wish to keep your space, please inform the Lesson Coordinator otherwise your space will be lost.

What should my child bring to their lesson?

Your child should come to lessons with a suitable fitting swimsuit or shorts, long hair tied back and goggles where possible.

What age do children need to be to start swim lessons?

Our lessons start from 3 months old in the early years programme, but for children older than 4 years and 5 months they will be enrolled in the Learn to Swim Programme.

Can parent/guardians attend in the water alongside their child?

Parent/Guardians can attend in the water if their child is enrolled in the Early years programme, (Adult & Baby, Adult & Toddler, and Adult & Child). Children enrolled in our Learn to Swim programme from 3.5-years-old can swim on their own in our pool.

What qualifications do your swimming instructors have?
Every swimming instructor at MLC is NPLQ qualified (National Pool Lifeguard Qualification), and SSTQ qualified (Scottish Swimming Teacher Qualification).

What is the ratio of instructors to students in each class?
Ratios vary depending on the ability of the children. 1A and 1B – 1:6 (One instructor for every six kids), 2B – 1:8, 2B and 3–1:10

How do I know which level to enrol my child in / How are children grouped for lessons?
Your child can complete a swim test to check their entry level, and these tests are bookable through our Lessons Coordinator.

Children are grouped according to their ability based on either starting from level 1A and working up OR completing a swim assessment to enter at the correct level

When will my child have completed lessons?
Children progress and develop at different stages, but Swim Skills 3 is the last class of mainstream lessons. Level 4 is optional and is for children who are looking to join the swimming club
